Every exhibitor wants a stunning LED video wall. But most exhibitors don't know what pixel pitch actually means — or how badly the wrong specification can waste their rental budget. P1.5, P2.5, P3.9: here is exactly what these numbers mean, how viewing distance determines the right choice, and how to spec your wall for any trade show booth without overpaying or under-delivering.
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centre of one LED cluster (pixel) and the centre of the next. A P2.5 panel has pixels spaced 2.5mm apart. A P1.5 panel has pixels spaced 1.5mm apart — nearly twice as dense. A P3.9 panel has pixels spaced 3.9mm apart, meaning noticeably fewer pixels over the same surface area.
Why does this matter? Fewer pixels per square metre means each pixel is physically larger and more visible as a distinct dot at close range. When you view a P3.9 wall from 3 feet away, you can see individual pixels. At 15 feet, you cannot — the image resolves cleanly. This is the entire logic behind pixel pitch selection: match the pitch to the minimum viewing distance in your booth, not to what sounds impressive in a spec sheet.
The most reliable formula for selecting pixel pitch is this: multiply the pixel pitch in millimetres by approximately 3.5 to get the minimum comfortable viewing distance in feet. So a P2.5 wall needs at least 8.75 feet (roughly 9 feet) of viewing distance for the image to resolve without visible pixel structure. A P1.5 wall works from about 5 feet.
The vast majority of trade show exhibitors over-specify their pixel pitch because they equate lower numbers with higher quality. In a standard 10x10 inline booth where the nearest visitor stands 6 to 8 feet from the back wall, P2.5 is indistinguishable from P1.5 in practice. You are paying a significant premium for resolution that no one in your booth can perceive.
Specifying P1.5 or P1.9 for a 20x20 island exhibit where visitors stand 12 to 20 feet away. At that distance, a P3.9 wall is visually identical — and costs substantially less to rent. Always measure your actual booth footprint and estimate the nearest viewer before specifying pitch.
In a standard 10x10 inline booth, visitors typically stand 6 to 10 feet from your back wall. The correct specification for this scenario is P1.9 to P2.5. At trade shows like Salesforce Dreamforce at Moscone Center or AWS re:Invent at the LVCC — where exhibitor technology standards are high — P1.9 is the appropriate choice because the audience will literally be within arm's reach of your display at times.
A 10x20 inline allows slightly more viewing distance — 8 to 14 feet — making P2.5 the sweet spot. For a 20x20 island exhibit where visitors approach from multiple aisles, the minimum viewing distance from the aisle edge is typically 10 to 14 feet. P2.5 to P2.9 covers this scenario correctly. Pixel pitch selection is not only about viewing distance — the type of content you display matters significantly. High-resolution still images and fine-detail product photography require finer pitch to render correctly, even at distances where coarser pitch would work for video. Text-heavy displays — event schedules, product specifications, data visualisations — also require finer pitch than motion video at equivalent viewing distances.
Video and motion graphics are more forgiving of coarser pitch than still images because motion blur masks individual pixel visibility. If your wall is displaying primarily looping video content, you can typically step one pitch level coarser than you would for a still-image display at the same viewing distance without any perceptible quality loss.
Brand colour accuracy is a separate consideration from resolution.
