iPad Pro for Your Next Event?

When Apple first released its professional grade of iPads in September of 2015 little did we know that there would be such a noticeable difference in specifications and user experience levels between the 9.7 and 12.9-inch versions.

But after getting our hands on them and testing each model, we reached the conclusion that the differences go beyond just the size. In this blog we’ll compare and contrast each model for when you’re deciding which model might be right for your next iPad rental.

Obviously the difference in diagonal size between both of these models is 3 inches. This might not seem like a lot, but if you plan to use these iPads for tasks beyond surfing the web and reading email, the difference is beyond noticeable.

With the launch of the iPad Pro, Apple also introduced the Apple Pencil. This is an interactive device shaped like a pencil that allows users to draw on the screen. The Apple Pencil is great for both taking notes and drawing.

However, if you’re planning to use Pencil for more detailed drawings and taking lots of notes, the 12.9-inch model is really required. The larger screen more closely mimics the size of a regular piece of paper, which won’t force you to focus so much on the scale of your drawings and writings.

We would also recommend the larger size for those that will use the device with a compatible Bluetooth keyboard. When the iPad Pro was first release there was a lot of talk about whether it could replace your everyday laptop. While that’s not very likely given the lack of multiple connectivity ports, the 12.9-inch model can be used nicely for basic email, word processing and other work-related functions.

The smaller screen will easily handle these tasks, but the larger screen more closely fits the more traditional laptop screen size and experience.

It goes without saying that the 9.7-inch version is lighter than its counterpart. The weight difference is about half a pound, but that makes a big difference in the user experience here.

The smaller iPad, which weighs just under 1 pound, can easily be held in one hand for extended periods, which makes it perfect for event producers who want to use the machines as mobile-friendly registration tools. The 12.9-inch model can’t really be held in one hand for long by anyone with average strength, and it’s not really meant to be used that way. At just under 1.5 pounds the larger iPad is best on a user’s lap or on a desktop.

While both models are equipped with an A9X chip, the 12.9 version has double the RAM with 4 GBs, making it noticeably faster when it comes to loading times and processing graphics. The larger version also offers a USB 3 lightning port, while the smaller model offers the slower USB 2 lightning port.

The USB 3 port allows connectivity of Apple’s faster USB 3 accessories and for quicker charging with the proper add ons like USB 3 to USB-C cable and an Apple 29 watt power supply.

Choosing which iPad rental might be right for you really depends on how you plan to use it. If you’re looking for a mobile-friendly machine that can be easily handled by everyone who uses it, the 9.7-model will be all you need. However, if you’re looking for a more complete laptop-like user experience the 12.9-inch model could be your best option.
